Snowstorm/Blizzard Safety Tips

Winter is in full effect, and while you can’t prevent a blizzard or snowstorm from crossing your path when it is forecasted, you can certainly prepare to keep your home, family, and yourself safe and protected. Below you will find some important tips for blizzard safety.
Build an emergency kit early.
Non-perishable food; Bottled water (3 days’ worth at least); Flashlights & extra batteries; Blankets & winter clothing; Portable phone charger; First-aid supplies; Medications; Battery-powered radio
Prepare the home.
Insulate windows & doors; Check heating systems & smoke detectors; Keep snow shovels, ice melt, and sand ready; Fuel up vehicles & generators.
Stay indoors and monitor forecasts.
Stay inside unless it is absolutely necessary to venture out. Keep warm by layering clothing; Use generators safely to avoid carbon monoxide; Use space heaters and other electrical heat sources with caution to avoid fires; Stay informed via emergency broadcasts.
Don’t drive or travel unless necessary.
Avoid all non-essential travel. If driving or traveling is necessary and you get stranded, stay in your vehicle. Run your engine periodically for heat and keep a window cracked to avoid CO buildup.
Dress in warm layers to prevent frostbite.
If you must go outside or need to clear the walkway/driveway, make sure to dress properly. A trio of layers is recommended: First layer to absorb sweat (cotton works best); Second layer to provide insulation (wool works best); Third layer should be waterproof and windproof.
Check on neighbors and the elderly.
Visit and check in regularly, especially with the elderly. Ensure they are safe and adequately heated, and ask about their water, food, and medication supply.
From snowstorm preparation to enduring blizzard conditions, these tips can be lifesavers.
