During Fire Prevention Week, take a few simple steps to make charging safer and reduce potential fire hazards around your home.

Use the right charger.

Use the charger that came with your device or a certified replacement designed for it.

Check your cords.

Replace chargers with frayed, cracked, or damaged wires. Damaged cords can create electrical hazards.

Charge on a hard surface.

Avoid charging phones, tablets, or laptops on beds, couches, or under blankets. These surfaces can trap heat.

Keep charging areas clear.

Don’t cover chargers or devices with clothing, pillows, or other materials while they are charging.

Avoid overloaded outlets.

Plugging too many devices into one outlet or power strip can create excessive heat.

Watch for overheating.

If a charger, battery, or device becomes unusually hot, unplug it and stop using it until the issue is checked.

Keep batteries away from extreme heat.
