5 Tips to Lower Your Energy Bill Without Freezing!

It is well known that in winter months energy costs tend to skyrocket. As the cold creeps in and the days get darker, we use more heat and electricity to compensate and continue our lives in a more comfortable way. However, a rising energy bill doesn’t have to be a consequence of these cold winter months. Here’s a few tips and tricks to help you save on energy costs without sacrificing comfort:

   1. Use LED Lighting

LED Lights might cost more in-store but they not only last longer, they also use less watts. Their long-lasting nature means you don’t have to replace them as often, saving you money on replacement costs, and because they use less wattage, it will save you money on your electricity bill in the long-term.

2. Use Cold Water for Laundry

If you wash clothes in hot water, you could be paying for unneeded heat use. When doing your laundry, try doing a load in cold water. Not only will it cut back on costs needed to heat the water, it’s also better if you’re trying to remove stains from your clothes!

3. Unplug appliances that aren’t in use

Phantom Energy can cause your energy bill to become more expensive than it needs to be. Phantom Energy refers to the energy that appliances use while they are turned off. This is a cost that can easily be cut down with minimal effort- all you have to do is unplug devices that you aren’t using! If you leave things such as your TV, toaster, phone charger, and video game consoles plugged in while you’re at work or away, you might want to consider unplugging them! To make this even easier, use a power strip for these items and just press the button to turn the power off before you leave the house!

4. Cover Refrigerated Food and Drink

When you put hot food in your refrigerator and it condensates, you’re causing your refrigerator to work harder causing it to raise your electric bill. To avoid this, make sure you cover all of your food and drink before placing it in the fridge. This will also preserve the taste of the food longer!

5. Use More Blankets!

We all know the winter can be quite brutal in most places. It’s always a rush to get back inside after spending time outdoors. However, if your heat is on full blast, you aren’t doing yourself any favors on your heating bill. A comfy way to combat this is to use more blankets! Instead of running up your bill, try piling on the blankets. Not only will you save on heating and electricity costs but, snuggling under a blanket with a pet or loved one is the perfect way to spend a cold winter day.

Using these methods individually might only save you a few dollars but, using all of these together could make a real impact on your electricity bill this winter. Do you have any tricks that you use to save costs during winter? Let us know!
